EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Edward Watkin (1819-1901), an esteemed English engineer and railway promoter, is depicted in this photograph. Known as 'Ape' due to his physical resemblance to the primate, Watkin's innovative spirit and tenacious determination left an indelible mark on the history of transportation. Born in London, Watkin's early career began in the military, but he soon turned his attention to the burgeoning railway industry. He rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure in the development of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway. In 1865, he was appointed as the chairman of the Metropolitan Railway Company, a position he held until 1877. Watkin's ambitions, however, extended far beyond the confines of London. He envisioned a tunnel connecting England and France, a project that would revolutionize travel between the two countries. In 1881, he established the Channel Tunnel Company with the aim of realizing this dream. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Watkin remained committed to the project, and in 1901, the company made significant progress, drilling the first tunnel shafts. Watkin's vision of a tunnel under the English Channel was a bold one, and though it was not completed during his lifetime, it paved the way for future generations to continue the work. This photograph captures Sir Edward Watkin in the prime of his career, a man driven by his passion for engineering and his belief in the transformative power of transportation infrastructure. This evocative image, taken in 1901, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dared to dream big and left an indelible mark on the annals of transportation history.
