EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, created in 1816, showcases three Old World monkey species: the silvery lutung or langur (Trachypithecus cristatus), the grivet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops), and the silhouetted background of lush vegetation. The illustration is a masterpiece from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France. The silvery lutung, with its silvery fur and distinctive crest, is depicted gracefully perched on a tree branch. Known as langurs, these primates are native to Southeast Asia and are characterized by their prehensile tails, which they use for balance and grasping. The grivet monkey, with its dark fur and prominent white eye rings, is shown sitting on the ground. Native to Africa, these monkeys are agile climbers and live in groups. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre, and engraved by Miss Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Pretre was an artist at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The meticulous attention to detail in this engraving is a testament to the artists' expertise and the advanced techniques of the time. This historical artwork is a valuable addition to any collection of zoological or natural history illustrations, providing a glimpse into the natural world as it was understood over two centuries ago.
