EDITORS COMMENTS
In this scene from Dion Boucicault's melodrama, 'The Colleen Bawn,' the heroine, Eily O'Connor, is seen pleading for the return of her beloved, Myles na Coppaleen, as she clings to a crescent-shaped rock in the moonlit waters of a tranquil lake. The women in the background, dressed in Victorian attire, express their concern and anxiety, their worried faces illuminated by the pale glow of the moon. The scene takes place during an entracte, a pause in the action, allowing the audience to catch their breath before the next act unfolds. Myles, played by Boucicault himself in some productions, is not yet in sight. The tension builds as the audience wonders if he will arrive in time to save Eily from drowning. The stage is set for a dramatic rescue, a staple of 19th-century melodrama. The archway in the background, framing the scene, adds to the sense of anticipation and suspense. Boucicault, an Irish dramatist, penned this popular play in 1860, and it quickly became a favorite among Victorian audiences for its gripping plot and emotional intensity. 'The Colleen Bawn' tells the story of Myles, a wronged man seeking revenge against those who have betrayed him, and Eily, the woman he loves, who is caught in the crossfire. The scene depicted here is a pivotal moment in their story, a moment of danger and desperation that tests their love and commitment to each other. This evocative image, captured by Terry Parker for Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to an era of live theatre, where the power of storytelling and the thrill of the performance came alive on the stage.
