EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Sarah Jay, born Sarah Van Brugh, the beloved wife of American diplomat and founding father, John Jay (1745-1829). Sarah, who was born on March 14, 1757, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of a prominent Quaker family. Her marriage to John Jay in 1785 brought her into the esteemed circle of American political elites. John Jay served many important roles during his illustrious career, including being a signatory of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the American Revolution, and serving as the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1789 to 1795. Sarah supported her husband throughout his endeavors, providing him with invaluable advice and assistance. This evocative portrait, created in 1802, captures Sarah's grace, intelligence, and refined elegance. She is depicted wearing a high-waisted, empire-line gown, which was popular during the Regency era. The intricate detailing of the fabric, the delicate lace collar, and the elegant hairstyle all contribute to the portrait's timeless beauty. Sarah Jay's life was marked by tragedy, as she lost her husband, her son, and her daughter-in-law within a span of five years. Despite these losses, she continued to be an influential figure in American society, using her connections and resources to support various charitable causes. This portrait is a poignant reminder of Sarah Jay's significant role in American history as the devoted wife of a founding father and a philanthropist in her own right. It offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left a lasting impact on the nation's early history.
