Charles Grey Grey (1875-1953), a pioneering figure in the early days of aviation, is captured in this striking photograph as he proudly poses next to an aeroplane in 1953. Grey was a British aviation pioneer who made significant contributions to the development of airplanes and flying techniques. He began his aviation career in 1909, just a few years after the Wright Brothers' first successful powered flight. Grey was an accomplished pilot and engineer, designing and building several of his own aircraft. He also set numerous aviation records, including becoming the first person to fly an aeroplane in Australia.
