EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Bleriot Parasol Monoplane, also known as the Bleriot XI or Type XI, in flight. The plane, registered as G-EAQN and piloted by American aviator Harry Hammond, took to the skies above the historic Brooklands racecourse in Surrey, England on a crisp January day in 1915. The Bleriot Parasol Monoplane, designed by the French aviation pioneer Louis Bleriot, was a significant advancement in aviation technology during that era. Its sleek monoplane design, with a single wing supporting the entire aircraft, offered improved stability and maneuverability compared to biplanes of the time. The Bleriot Parasol Monoplane, powered by a 50 horsepower Le Rhone rotary engine, could reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Its open-cockpit design, with the pilot sitting exposed to the elements, added to the thrill and adventure of early aviation. In this photograph, Hammond skillfully navigates the plane through the air, leaving a trail of vapor in the cold winter sky. The image captures the spirit of the early aviation era, a time of innovation, excitement, and daring exploits. The Bleriot Parasol Monoplane, with its distinctive parasol wing, became an iconic symbol of the burgeoning aviation industry. This photograph is a testament to the courage and determination of early aviators like Hammond, who pushed the boundaries of human flight and opened the door to a new era of transportation and exploration.
