EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a tender moment between Queen Mary, the consort of King George V of England (1865-1936), and her grandson, Hubert Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1926-2011), in the year of her death, 1953. The image, taken by an unidentified photographer, reveals the deep bond between the Queen and her beloved family, as she dotes on her grandson, who was the eldest child of her daughter, Princess Mary (b. 1897), and her husband, the Viscount Lascelles, later the 6th Earl of Harewood. Born on May 26, 1867, Queen Mary was the daughter of German parents, Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein and Prince Friedrich of Prussia. She married the future King George V in 1893, and their marriage was marked by a deep love and devotion that lasted throughout their lives. The Queen was known for her graciousness, her style, and her commitment to public service, and she played a significant role in supporting her husband during his reign. In this photograph, taken in the final years of her life, Queen Mary is seen cradling her grandson, Hubert, who was just seven years old at the time. The image is a poignant reminder of the intergenerational connections that bind families together, and it offers a glimpse into the personal side of a public figure who was revered for her grace and dignity. Hubert Lascelles, who would later become the 6th Earl of Harewood, went on to serve in the Royal Navy during World War II and became a prominent figure in British society. He was known for his love of horses and his support of the arts, and he played a significant role in the restoration of Harewood House, the family seat. This photograph, with its intimate and poignant depiction of a grandmother and her grandson, is a testament to the enduring power of family ties and the love that transcends the passage of time.
