EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of the Reverend Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), a leading figure in the Oxford Movement, a religious and theological revival in the Church of England during the 19th century. Pusey's influence on the movement was significant, as he advocated for a return to the early Church Fathers and the sacramental practices of the pre-Reformation Church. Born in 1800 in Oxford, England, Pusey was educated at the University of Oxford and ordained as a deacon in 1823. He became a fellow of Oriel College in 1827 and was later appointed as a professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford in 1836. However, it was his involvement in the Oxford Movement, which began in the late 1820s and sought to reform the Church of England and re-establish its historical and spiritual connections with the ancient Church, that would bring him the most notoriety. Pusey's writings and sermons, which emphasized the importance of tradition and the sacraments, were influential in shaping the movement's theology. He also played a key role in the Tractarian controversy, a series of debates within the Anglican Church over the role of tradition in interpreting scripture. Despite facing criticism and even excommunication from some quarters, Pusey remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to be a leading voice in the Oxford Movement until his death in 1882. This photograph, taken in 1882, captures Pusey in the later years of his life, with the wisdom and gravitas of a man who had dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual truth and the restoration of the Church of England to its historical roots.
