EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the image of Private J. Mackenzie, a brave and heroic soldier of the 2nd Scots Guards, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for his exceptional valor during the Battle of Loos in 1915. Born on 22 November 1871, Mackenzie was a dedicated and courageous guardsman who served with distinction in the British Army during the First World War. On the fateful day of 25 September 1915, during the Battle of Loos, Mackenzie's company was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Despite being wounded himself, Mackenzie refused to retreat and instead rallied his comrades, leading them in a daring charge against the German lines. With great bravery and determination, he single-handedly captured a machine gun nest, allowing his unit to advance and gain a crucial foothold in enemy territory. Tragically, Mackenzie was killed in action shortly after, but his heroic actions saved countless lives and turned the tide of the battle. The Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British military, was awarded to Mackenzie in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the incredible courage and determination displayed by Private J. Mackenzie and the many other brave soldiers who fought and died during the First World War. The image of Mackenzie, standing proudly in his uniform, with the Victoria Cross proudly displayed, is a testament to the enduring legacy of the heroes of the 1st Great War.
