EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century print depicts a group of Presbyterian worshippers, with the masked character Fritelin, or Fritellino, from the Farces Tabariniques, a popular form of French Commedia dell'Arte, peering in from the edge of the scene. The early history of this image is not definitively known, but it is believed to have been created during the height of the Commedia dell'Arte era in France, around the late 1600s. Fritelin, often portrayed as a mischievous and clever servant, is a beloved and versatile character in the Commedia dell'Arte tradition. He is typically depicted wearing a distinctive mask with a long, curved beak and a large, round, white face. In this print, Fritelin's masked visage is framed by the dark, somber attire of the Presbyterian worshippers, creating a striking contrast between the sacred and the secular worlds. The Presbyterian Church, a Protestant denomination that emerged during the Reformation, placed great emphasis on the importance of individual faith and the interpretation of the Bible. The worshippers in the print are shown with their Bibles open, deep in thought and prayer, while Fritelin looks on with a curious and perhaps mocking expression. This juxtaposition of the sacred and the profane is a common theme in Commedia dell'Arte, and it speaks to the complex and often contradictory nature of human experience. Despite the apparent incongruity of Fritelin's presence in this religious setting, it is important to remember that Commedia dell'Arte was not merely a form of entertainment, but also a reflection of the social and cultural contexts of its time. This intriguing print offers a glimpse into the rich and complex world of 17th century French society, where the boundaries between the sacred and the profane were not always clearly defined.
