The Paris revolution

A barricade at the corner of the Boulevard Rue Mazagran in Paris, 1848. In France, the catalyst for the revolutions in the rest of Europe, the monarchy was replaced by the Second Republic, with Louis Napoleon as president from 1852. A series of revolts occurred in various parts of Europe against monarchical rule. Although some of the revolutionaries had republican ideas, many more were motivated by economic grievances. None of the revolutions enjoyed any lasting success, and most were violently suppressed within a few months. Date: 1848

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tumultuous atmosphere of the Paris Revolution in 1848, as a barricade rises at the corner of the Boulevard Rue Mazagran. The Paris Revolution, a pivotal moment in European history, marked the end of the July Monarchy in France and the establishment of the Second Republic. The revolution was a catalyst for a series of revolts across Europe, as people rose up against monarchical rule. While some revolutionaries were driven by republican ideals, many more were motivated by economic grievances and a desire for social and political change. In France, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, emerged as the president of the Second Republic in 1852, following a coup d'état. However, none of the revolutions enjoyed any lasting success, and most were violently suppressed within a few months. This print, from the extensive archive of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in European history, when the old order was challenged and new ideas began to take root. The image of the barricade on the Boulevard Rue Mazagran stands as a powerful reminder of the revolutionary spirit that swept through Europe in the mid-19th century, and the enduring impact it had on the political landscape of the continent.
