EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts an adult New Zealand Falcon, or Karearea (Falco novaeseelandiae), in its natural habitat alongside its young offspring. Painted by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," this illustration was published in Volume 2, Plate 23, in 1888. The New Zealand Falcon is New Zealand's only native falcon species and is also known as the New Zealand Sparrowhawk or Karearea. This bird of prey is a raptor, belonging to the Falconidae family and the Falconiformes order. The adult falcon is characterized by its slender body, broad wings, and long, pointed tail. Its plumage is predominantly brown with black barring on its wings and a distinctive white "moustache" marking on its face. The young falcon, or eyas, is depicted in this artwork with its downy feathers and closed eyes, signifying that it is still in the nestling stage. The New Zealand Falcon is an apex predator, feeding mainly on birds, reptiles, and large insects. It is a solitary bird and is well adapted to its unique environment, with excellent eyesight and agility that enables it to hunt effectively. This historical watercolor painting is a testament to the rich natural history of New Zealand and the dedication of naturalists like Sir Walter Lawry Buller and JG Keulemans in documenting the country's avian species. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this artwork continue to captivate viewers and provide valuable insights into the natural world of the past.
