EDITORS COMMENTS
Frank Tinney, the American comedian, poses with Desiree Ellinger in this photograph taken backstage at the Vaudeville Theatre in London during the production of 'Sometime' in 1925. The atmosphere is electric as the lights of the theatre flicker in the background, casting an ethereal glow over the scene. Tinney, with his face blacked out in traditional minstrel makeup, is a striking contrast against the elegant and sophisticated Desiree Ellinger. The 1920s were a golden age for vaudeville theatre in the UK, and Tinney was a popular and beloved figure on the English stage. Despite the controversy surrounding the use of blackface in entertainment at the time, Tinney's comedic talent and charm won over audiences. 'Sometime' was not a successful run for Tinney, however, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era in theatre history. The Vaudeville Theatre, which opened in 1874, was a hub of entertainment in London's West End and played host to a diverse range of acts, from music hall performers to Shakespearean actors. This photograph captures a moment in time when two talented artists came together to create a memorable theatrical experience.
