EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment when Sally, a young chimpanzee, arrived at the Zoological Gardens in London during October 1883. The image, taken in 1891, shows Sally as a small and curious infant, clinging to her mother's back as they make their way through the bustling crowds of visitors. The Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park had been a popular attraction since its establishment in 1828, and the arrival of a new chimpanzee was always an exciting event. Sally, who was born in the wilds of West Africa, was one of the first chimpanzees to be brought to Europe for public display. Her arrival marked the beginning of a new era in the study and exhibition of these fascinating primates. Chimpanzees were a source of great fascination for Victorians, who saw them as a link to their own evolutionary past. Sally and her mother were kept in a specially constructed enclosure, where they were observed and studied by scientists and visitors alike. The chimpanzees were also used in various performances and shows, which were a popular attraction for the public. Despite the fascination with these primates, conditions in the zoos of the time were often inadequate, and many animals suffered from poor living conditions and lack of proper care. Sally and her mother were no exception, and their health and wellbeing were a cause of concern for many animal welfare activists. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between humans and animals during the 1890s. It captures the sense of wonder and curiosity that surrounded the arrival of a new and exotic species, while also highlighting the ethical dilemmas and challenges of keeping wild animals in captivity.
