EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Branche in 1840, captures a significant religious ceremony taking place in the Audience Hall (Arz Odacy) or Throne apartment of the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey. The scene is set on the day before the Beyram festival, an important Islamic holiday. The Sultan, the imperial ruler of the Ottoman Empire and the caliph of the Sunni Muslim world, is depicted seated on his throne, surrounded by his counsellors and advisors, all dressed in traditional Ottoman attire and wearing turbans. The bearer of the imperial petitions stands at the foot of the throne, ready to present the Sultan with the daily petitions from his subjects. The atmosphere is one of solemnity and reverence, as the Sultan prepares for the upcoming festival and seeks guidance from his trusted advisors. The intricate details of the palace decor, the ornate costumes, and the serious expressions of the figures all contribute to the sense of tradition and history that permeates this image. This engraving is taken from the work "Historia de Turquia" by Joseph Marie Jouannin and Jules Van Gaver, published in 1840, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the religious and imperial life of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century.
