EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful chromolithograph captures the heartbreaking scene of the Expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain by order of King Philip III in 1609. The image depicts a family of Moriscos, Christians of Muslim origin who were forced to convert to Christianity, being driven out of their homeland on horseback. The sadness and despair on their faces is palpable as they are forced to leave behind their belongings and travel into an uncertain future. The expulsion began in the kingdom of Valencia and marked a dark chapter in Spanish history, where thousands of Moriscos were uprooted from their homes and communities. Illustrated by J. Alaminos for Miguel Morayta's General History of Spain, this scene serves as a poignant reminder of the religious persecution and intolerance that plagued Europe during this period. The vibrant colors used in this chromolithograph bring to life the anguish and turmoil experienced by those who were expelled from their homeland simply because of their faith. As we reflect on this historical event, let us remember the importance of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding towards all individuals regardless of their beliefs or background. May we strive to create a world where such injustices are never repeated.
