EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print commemorates the end of the Vendée War on 20 April 1795, when General Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Sade, Comte de Hoche signed a treaty with the Bretons, bringing an official end to the conflict in the western regions of France. The Vendée War, also known as the War in the Vendée or the War of the Vendée, was a brutal and protracted uprising against the French Revolution, primarily in the Vendée and Loire-Inférieure regions. The conflict began in 1793, as many in the area, particularly the Catholic peasantry, opposed the secular and revolutionary policies of the new French government. The rebellion gained momentum and spread, with the royalist insurgents, known as the "Chouans," inflicting heavy defeats on the Republican forces. However, by 1795, the tide began to turn, and General Hoche was sent to quell the rebellion. After a series of successful campaigns, Hoche was able to negotiate a peace treaty with the Bretons, which included amnesty for those who had taken up arms against the Republic. The treaty also allowed for the reinstatement of Catholic worship and the return of confiscated property. Despite the signing of the treaty, it is important to note that many in the region continued to harbor anti-republican sympathies. The west of France remained a hotbed of resistance to the Revolution, and the area would continue to pose a challenge to the new French government for years to come. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of the French Revolution and the challenges faced by the new French Republic in establishing its authority over the entire country.
