EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and hardships of World War II, the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome, Italy, stood as a beacon of comfort and relaxation for Allied soldiers. Commandeered from a department store roughly the size of London's Selfridges, this impressive establishment was named after the Allied commander, Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis. The multi-level building, operated by the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NaFI), was a welcome retreat for weary troops. At the heart of the Alexander Club was an internal, roofed, open space, where a serene pool filled with goldfish and a fountain created an idyllic atmosphere. Soldiers could take a break from the rigors of war and enjoy the luxuries of a poolside lounge, a library, a barber shop, and even a cinema. The WVS Information Bureau, visible in this photograph, was also located within the club, providing soldiers with essential information and communication services. This photograph, taken circa 1944, offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of Allied troops during World War II. The Alexander Club in Rome served as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Allied forces, who managed to transform a commercial space into a haven of relaxation and camaraderie in the midst of war.
