EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts a young Weddell's Palm, Lytocaryum weddellianum, also known as Cocos weddelliana or Tahitian Screw Pine. The image is taken from an illustration by Desire Bois, published in Edward Step's "Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse" in 1896 by Frederick Warne in London. The Weddell's Palm is native to the tropical regions of the Americas, specifically the Caribbean and Central America. It is characterized by its slender trunk, which is covered in sharp, recurved spines, and its fan-shaped leaves, which can grow up to 3 meters in length. The plant is named after the German botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, who first described it in 1824, and was later renamed in honor of the British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker's patron, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker Weddell. The Weddell's Palm is a popular ornamental plant in tropical gardens and greenhouses due to its attractive foliage and relatively small size. It is often grown for its decorative value as a specimen plant or as a border plant. The plant prefers a warm and humid climate, and requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. It is also known to be relatively easy to propagate from seed or cuttings. This Victorian-era illustration captures the beauty and elegance of the Weddell's Palm in its youth, with its vibrant green leaves and slender trunk. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph make it a stunning addition to any botanical collection or garden-themed decor. The illustration also serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and horticulture during the Victorian era, when the cultivation and display of exotic plants was a source of great pride and fascination.
