EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Threadfin Bream, Pentapodus fasciuola, also known as the Spotted Drum, Equetus punctatus, Cavaliere Punteschiato, or Punteggiato in Italian. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The Threadfin Bream is a marine fish native to the Indo-Pacific region, characterized by its elongated body, distinctive thread-like fins, and prominent black spots along its sides. The fish is shown in this illustration in a lifelike pose, with its mouth slightly open and its fins spread out. The engraving was created by the skilled hand of Carini, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique are evident in the intricate texture and shading of the fish's scales and fins. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work that aimed to document the natural world through accurate and beautiful illustrations. This Threadfin Bream engraving is a testament to the success of that endeavor, providing a stunning and enduring record of this fascinating marine species.
