EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Scenes from the East Coast of Africa, 1820," transports us back in time to a world of intrigue, wonder, and cultural exchange. The first scene (No. 61) depicts a serene moment on Comoro Island, with ducks peacefully gliding on a sacred lake. The tranquility is soon shattered, however, as we move on to Sofala, Mozambique, where Solomons merchants engage in lively trade with local natives. Ivory and peacocks are among the valuable commodities exchanged, symbolizing the lucrative ivory trade that thrived in the region. Scene No. 62 offers a glimpse into the historic meeting between Vasco da Gama and the Muslim ruler of Mozambique, Francisco Barreto, in 1498. The Portuguese explorer's arrival marked the beginning of European influence in Africa, and this encounter is depicted with a sense of awe and reverence. The third scene (No. 63) takes us on an exhilarating adventure as natives chase a wild elephant through the Mozambican wilderness, armed with torches. The thrill of the chase is palpable, highlighting the close relationship between humans and nature in this part of the world. This fascinating collection of scenes, taken from Rev. Isaac Taylor's "Scenes in Africa for the Amusement and Instruction of Little Tarry-at-Home Travelers," published by Harris and Son, London, in 1820, offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of the East Coast of Africa during the early 19th century. From the sacred shores of Comoro Island to the bustling markets of Mozambique, these captivating images transport us to a time when the world was a much larger and more mysterious place.
