EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph print depicts three intricately designed medallion portraits: Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edward Bourne, and Sir William Hamilton. The portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a renowned British painter of the 18th century, is captured in the upper left corner. His portrait is adorned with a laurel wreath, symbolizing his status as a distinguished artist. Beneath Sir Joshua Reynolds, we find the portrait of Edward Bourne, a bricklayer who worked at the Etruria Wedgwood factory. His portrait, in the lower left corner, is encircled by a decorative border of intertwining vines and leaves, typical of the Wedgwood ceramics style. The intricacy and detail of the design highlight the skill and artistry of both the artist, Grivell, and the lithographer, Parrot et Co. On the right side of the print, Sir William Hamilton, a Scottish diplomat and collector, is depicted in his medallion portrait. Hamilton was known for his extensive collection of Greek antiquities, which he acquired during his diplomatic post in Naples. The portrait is surrounded by a border of classical motifs, reflecting his connection to the ancient world. This charming print, drawn by Grivell and lithographed by Parrot et Co., is taken from Frederick Rathbone's Old Wedgwood, a comprehensive work documenting the decorative and artistic ceramic work produced by Josiah Wedgwood. The print showcases the exquisite detail and craftsmanship of the Wedgwood factory during the late 19th century, as well as the diverse range of subjects that inspired their designs.
