EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving by du Casse, after an illustration by Adolph Fries from the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases four distinct varieties of the common pigeon, Columba livia. The varieties depicted are the hirondelle (swallow-like), glouglou (drummer), tambour (tambourine), and polonais (Polish). The hirondelle pigeon, with its slender body and elongated wings, is reminiscent of a swallow in flight. The glouglou, also known as the drummer pigeon, can be identified by the distinctive white stripe above its eye and the red markings on its wings. The tambour pigeon, named for its tambourine-like cooing sound, displays a white collar and a black band across its chest. Lastly, the polonais pigeon, with its white spots and black bars, is believed to have originated in Poland. This intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the meticulous work of the illustrator and engraver, capturing the unique features of each pigeon variety with remarkable accuracy. The Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle was a groundbreaking work in the field of ornithology and zoology, showcasing a wide range of species with exceptional illustrations and providing valuable information about their natural history. Today, this engraving remains an invaluable resource for those interested in the study and appreciation of birds.
