EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the Hope Public House in Barking, Essex, taken in the 1960s. The image captures the corner view of this historic pub, with its distinctive red brick facade and ornate signage. The Hope, which was not affiliated with the Punch Taverns company during this period, was a beloved local institution for over two decades prior to this photograph, as evidenced by the trading records from 1947 and 1961 inscribed on the back of the print. The 1960s were a pivotal decade for the Hope, as it thrived as a social hub for the community. The pub's warm and inviting atmosphere drew in patrons from all walks of life, who came together to enjoy a pint and a hearty conversation. The Savill Brothers, who likely ran the pub during this time, would have been proud to welcome regulars and newcomers alike. Sadly, by April 2017, the Hope had closed its doors, leaving behind a sense of nostalgia for those who had once called it their local. But the memories of this cherished pub live on, immortalized in this beautiful photograph. Take a moment to appreciate the history and character of the Hope Public House, a true gem of Barking's past.
