The scene depicts British and Portuguese forces, led by General Sir John Moore and General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington), crossing the Douro River in Portugal to engage the French Empire army under Marshal Jean-Andoche Junot. The successful crossing marked a turning point in the war, as it prevented the French from advancing further into Portugal and securing their hold on the Iberian Peninsula.
