EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Nile hippopotamus, scientifically known as Hippopotamus amphibius. The hippopotamus is a large, semi-aquatic mammal native to Sub-Saharan Africa, and is the largest extant species of the order Artiodactyla. The Nile hippopotamus is a vulnerable species, with populations declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The engraving is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, a natural history publication produced in Nuremberg in 1771. The work was part of a series of natural history collections known as Wunderkammern or Cabinets of Curiosities, which were popular during the Age of Enlightenment. This particular engraving was likely part of a collection owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew, a prominent Nuremberg physician and naturalist. The hippopotamus in the engraving is depicted in a lifelike and detailed manner, with its massive body submerged in water and its large, powerful jaws open. The intricately detailed engraving showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of the time, as well as the fascination with the natural world that characterized the era. Despite the passage of centuries, this engraving remains an important historical record of the Nile hippopotamus and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect this vulnerable species and preserve biodiversity.
