EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Vibrant Encounter of Morpho Laertes and Callicore Hydaspes: A 19th-Century Lithograph This handcoloured lithograph showcases two exquisite species of butterflies, Morpho Laertes and Callicore Hydaspes, in their natural splendor. The image is taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The Morpho Laertes, also known as the Blue Morpho, is depicted in the foreground. Its large, iridescent wings display a striking blue hue, with black borders and a distinctive white band near the edge. Morpho butterflies are renowned for their remarkable wings, which can appear to glow in the sunlight due to their unique structure and the way they refract light. In the background, the Callicore Hydaspes, or the Hydaspes Eighty-Eight, graces us with its presence. This small, colorful butterfly is a member of the Nymphalidae family, commonly known as the "Nymphalids." Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of orange, black, and white, with a striking orange patch on each wing. The name "little callicore" refers to its diminutive size compared to other butterfly species. The meticulous handcoloring and the intricate details of the lithograph bring these beautiful creatures to life, allowing us to appreciate their natural beauty and the intricacies of their wing patterns. This image is a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the 19th century, when natural history was a burgeoning field of exploration and discovery.
