EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing 19th-century print titled "The Surprise," by renowned English illustrator Wildrake, we witness a landowner, Mr. Jorrocks, making an unexpected discovery on his estate. The scene unfolds along the banks of a serene river, where poachers Benjamin and Joshua Sneakington are netting partridges for illicit sale. Mr. Jorrocks, dressed in a top hat and wearing a facey expression, is shocked to find Benjamin wringing the neck of a freshly caught partridge, which Joshua has handed him from the net. The landowner's face betrays his anger and disbelief, as he turns to confront the poachers. Meanwhile, a lady on a sidesaddle horse approaches the scene, her face filled with concern and curiosity. She is likely Mrs. Lucy Somerville, a character from Robert Smith Surtees' novel "Hillingdon Hall, or the Cockney Squire." The huntsman, Mr. Romford, and his hounds can be seen in the background, having presumably been alerted by the commotion. The poachers, startled by the landowner's sudden appearance, attempt to make their escape. One poacher jumps into the river in a desperate bid to evade capture, while the other two make a run for it, leaving their net behind. The huntsman and hounds give chase, with the partridges scattered in all directions. This handcoloured steel engraving, taken from an illustration by Wildrake in John C. Nimmo's edition of Surtees' novel, captures the excitement and drama of a Victorian-era country estate. The comical and humorous elements of the print, such as the poacher in the river and the surprised expression on Mr. Jorrocks' face, add to its enduring appeal.
