EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures J.H. Gettins, a prominent footballer of the late Victorian era, in action for both Millwall and Middlesbrough during the 1890s. Gettins, born in 1872, is considered one of the pioneers of English football, having made his professional debut for Millwall in 1892. He quickly established himself as a formidable player, earning a move to Middlesbrough in 1895. Gettins' tenure at Middlesbrough was marked by his versatility and skill on the field. He could play in various positions, including forward, half-back, and full-back, making him an invaluable asset to the team. In the 1895-96 season, Gettins helped Middlesbrough secure the Second Division championship, earning them promotion to the First Division. This photograph, taken during the 1890s, showcases Gettins in his Middlesbrough kit, exuding confidence and determination as he gazes intently at the ball. The image is a testament to the passion and dedication of early footballers, who played the game for the love of sport rather than financial gain. Gettins' career was cut short by injury in 1898, but his impact on the game was significant. He is remembered as one of the first professional footballers to use a leather strap to protect his shins, a practice that would later become standard in the sport. This photograph serves as a reminder of Gettins' contributions to the early history of football and his enduring legacy as a sportsman and pioneer.
