EDITORS COMMENTS
Guillaume de Vienne, also known as William of Vienna, was a prominent counsellor and chamberlain in the courts of the King of France and Philip the Good during the 15th century. This impressive chromolithograph print is an image of Guillaume's coat of arms, taken from Loredan Larchey's "Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle" (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The armorial is illustrated from manuscript 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. Guillaume de Vienne's coat of arms displays a golden fleece on a blue background, symbolizing his membership in the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece. The order was established by Philip the Good in 1430, and Guillaume was one of its earliest members. The fleece is surrounded by a double-headed eagle, representing the dual sovereignty of the King of France and the Duke of Burgundy, whose courts Guillaume served. The shield is supported by two lions, a common heraldic symbol of strength and courage. Guillaume de Vienne's career was marked by his service to the French and Burgundian monarchs. He was a trusted advisor and confidant to both kings, and played a key role in diplomatic and political affairs. His coat of arms is a testament to his high rank and his membership in the most exclusive order of the time, reflecting his status as a powerful and influential figure in the courts of medieval Europe.
