June 19, 1864: A Deerhound to the Rescue during the Sinking of the Alabama Amidst the chaos and destruction of the American Civil War, an unlikely hero emerged during the sinking of the Confederate war-steamer Alabama by the Federal steam-sloop Kearsarge. This historic moment, captured in this photograph from Mary Evans Prints Online, shows a Deerhound courageously rescuing a portion of the Alabama's crew as they cling to debris in the water. The Alabama, under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes, was a formidable Confederate raider that had sunk over 60 Union ships during its two-year tenure. However, on June 19, 1864, the Alabama met its demise off the coast of Cherbourg, France, when it was engaged in a fierce battle with the Kearsarge. The battle lasted for several hours, resulting in significant damage to both ships. As the Alabama began to sink, the crew faced a desperate situation. Many were unable to reach the lifeboats or were separated from them in the chaos. It was in this moment that the Deerhound, a loyal companion to one of the crew members, sprang into action. The breed, known for its strength and agility, swam through the rough waters, reaching out with its powerful jaws to grasp at the struggling crew members, pulling them to safety.
