EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph showcases the enchanting beauty of the Bird's Nest Orchid, Neottia nidus-avis. Depicted in intricate detail, the delicate petals of this rare orchid are arranged like a miniature nest, earning it the common name. The Bird's Nest Orchid is a terrestrial orchid native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It was first discovered in 1837 by the German botanist, Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, during an expedition to Brazil. This stunning illustration is taken from Diederich von Schlechtendal's renowned publication, "Flora von Deutschland" (German Flora), published in Jena, Germany, in 1871. Von Schlechtendal was a prominent botanist and publisher, known for his meticulous work in documenting the natural world. The handcoloured lithograph was produced using a technique that involved drawing on a limestone plate with a greasy pencil, then covering it with a thin layer of liquid asphaltum. The plate was then treated with a mixture of water and gum arabic, which repelled the asphaltum, allowing the artist to apply watercolour to the areas they wished to colour. The resulting image is a breathtaking work of art and science, a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the natural world. The Bird's Nest Orchid remains a rare and elusive plant, prized by collectors and botanists alike for its unique appearance and rarity. This illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
