EDITORS COMMENTS
Antoine de Saint Chamans, Lord of Mery (1563-1627), is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph, which is a reproduction of a portrait from the gallery collection of Roger de Gaignières. Saint Chamans, whose full title was Antoine de Saint Chamans, Seigneur de Mery, was a prominent figure in French society during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was a member of the Parlement of Paris, the highest court in France, and held various other important positions in the royal administration. The portrait captures Saint Chamans in the height of fashionable attire for a French nobleman of his time. He wears a long, flowing doublet, which is decorated with intricate lace collars and cuffs, as well as a velvet waistcoat and breeches. The rich fabric of his doublet is further accentuated by the contrasting white linen shirt and ruff, which adds a sense of elegance and refinement to the image. The portrait also showcases Saint Chamans' elaborate hairstyle, which features a long, curled wig, adorned with a feather and a jeweled brooch. The lithograph is taken from the renowned collection of historical costumes of France, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the direction of Paul Lacroix. The Administration de Librairie in Paris produced this collection, which was a significant contribution to the study and preservation of French historical costume. The meticulous attention to detail in this reproduction allows us to gain a deeper appreciation for the fashion and style of the French nobility during the late Renaissance period.
