EDITORS COMMENTS
Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus, the infamous Roman Emperor as portrayed in Jean Racine's tragic play "Britannicus" (1670). Born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus in 37 AD, Nero succeeded his step-father Claudius as emperor in 54 AD at the age of 16. Racine's play, set during Nero's early reign, focuses on the power struggle between Nero and his step-brother Britannicus, as well as Nero's tumultuous relationship with his mother Agrippina the Elder. The image captures the young and charismatic Nero, dressed in the regal robes of a Roman emperor, with a serious yet determined expression on his face. The background is adorned with symbols of imperial power, including a laurel wreath and an eagle, the symbol of Rome. Despite his early promise, Nero's reign was marked by extravagance, cruelty, and paranoia. He was accused of ordering the death of his step-brother Britannicus, as well as his mother Agrippina and many other family members and political rivals. Nero's reign ended in 68 AD when he was forced to commit suicide during the Roman civil war. Racine's play "Britannicus" offers a compelling and dramatic portrayal of Nero's early reign, highlighting the complex power dynamics and personal relationships that shaped the Roman Empire during this tumultuous period of history.
