Mural decorations in the Stoke-on-Trent British Restaurant during the Second World War

Mural decorations in the Stoke-on-Trent British Restaurant during the Second World War, on the theme of 1851 and All That and carried out by Arthur Berry. Picture on the right shows a detail of the mural while the left photograph shows the interior of the restaurant and the pictures in situ on the wall. British Restaurants were communal restaurants during the Second World War providing a cooked meal, with dessert and a cup of tea or coffee, for around the cost of 1s.2d. While operated on a canteen basis, meals were eaten at a table and allowed people, including war workers and those who had bombed out of their homes or might have difficulty cooking or making a packed lunch at home, a nutritious and affordable meal, which could be eaten in addition to wartime rations. Many restaurants were decorated inside with murals as a way to make the surroundings pleasant. Date: 1946

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the interior of a British Restaurant in Stoke-on-Trent during the Second World War, adorned with intricate mural decorations created by local artist Arthur Berry. British Restaurants were communal dining establishments that provided a cooked meal, including dessert and a cup of tea or coffee, for around 1s.2d (approximately 6p in modern currency) during the war years. Operating on a canteen basis, these restaurants offered a nutritious and affordable alternative to wartime rations for those in need, including war workers and individuals who had been displaced from their homes due to bombings. The murals, inspired by the theme of "1851 and All That," were a common feature in many British Restaurants, aiming to create a pleasant and uplifting atmosphere. The detail on the right showcases the intricate detail and artistry of Berry's work, while the left photograph offers a glimpse into the restaurant's interior, with the murals in situ on the wall. The Ministry of Food oversaw the operation of British Restaurants, ensuring that the meals provided were balanced and nutritious, offering a sense of normalcy and community during a time of great hardship. The murals, like the meals they accompanied, served as a reminder that even in the midst of war, there was still beauty and joy to be found.
