Muhammad III As-Sadiq Bey (1859-1881): A Regal Portrait of the Last Independent Bey of Tunisia This photograph captures Muhammad III As-Sadiq Bey, the last independent ruler of Tunisia before the French protectorate, in his regal attire. Taken in the late 19th century, the image showcases the Bey's imposing presence and the grandeur of his Tunisian court. Born in 1859, Muhammad III As-Sadiq Bey ascended to the throne at the tender age of 13 following the death of his father, Muhammad III Al-Mamun Bey. His reign was marked by a series of political and economic challenges, including the increasing influence of European powers in the region. In this portrait, the Bey is depicted wearing a traditional Tunisian fez, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a red tassel. The richness of his clothing and the opulence of his surroundings reflect the wealth and power of the Beylicate of Tunis during this period.
