EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Martinsyde F4 Buzzard fighter plane, serial number D 4256, standing proudly on the tarmac in the twilight of World War I. The Martinsyde F4 Buzzard, a British single-seat biplane fighter, was designed and built by the Martinsyde Aeroplane Company towards the end of the war. Its first flight took place in early 1918, but unfortunately, it was too late to see combat action in the Great War. The F4 Buzzard was a formidable machine for its time, boasting a top speed of 115 miles per hour and an impressive climb rate of 1,500 feet per minute. It was equipped with two Vickers machine guns that could be synchronized to fire through the propeller, making it a potent weapon against enemy aircraft. The biplane's distinctive appearance, with its large, uncovered engine and angular wings, made it a striking sight on the battlefield. Despite its late entry into the war, the Martinsyde F4 Buzzard left a lasting impact on the aviation world. Its advanced design and impressive performance paved the way for future fighter aircraft, and it continued to serve in various roles after the war, including as a trainer and a reconnaissance plane. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Martinsyde F4 Buzzard, a true icon of the early aviation era.
