Nadejda was the second daughter of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and his morganatic wife, Countess Sophie von Merenberg. Her elder sister was Countess Anastasia de Torby. George, who was previously known as Prince George of Battenberg, Earl of Medina, was the elder son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. The Mountbattens were a prominent European royal family with a rich and complex history.
