EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo (1867-1876): A Regal Portrait of the First Queen of Spain This colored engraving depicts Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo, the first wife of King Amadeo I of Spain. Born in Turin, Italy, in 1851, Maria Vittoria was the daughter of Prince Odoardo dal Pozzo and Princess Maria Teresa of Savoy. At the age of 19, she became the Spanish monarch's consort in 1870, marking the beginning of the Bourbon-Parma dynasty in Spain. The engraving, published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1870, captures the young queen's striking features and regal bearing. Her delicate face is adorned with an intricate ringlet hairstyle, a popular fashion trend during the late 19th century. Her expressive eyes convey a sense of intelligence and grace, while her noble posture and elegant attire underscore her status as a monarch. Maria Vittoria's marriage to Amadeo I was short-lived, as political instability and popular opposition to the Italian-born queen led to her abdication in 1873. Despite her brief reign, she left an indelible mark on Spanish history as the first Italian queen of Spain. This enchanting image offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played a significant role in the political landscape of Europe during the late 19th century. Maria Vittoria dal Pozzo's story is a testament to the enduring power of royal lineages and the complexities of European monarchies.
