EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enchanting beauty and regal presence of Louise-Françoise de Bourbon (1673-1743), the illegitimate daughter of the renowned King Louis XIV of France. Born in the Palace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Louise-Françoise was recognized and legitimized by her father in 1673. Her striking features and graceful demeanor earned her the nickname "Mademoiselle de Nantes." In 1685, at the age of twelve, she married Louis-Henri, Prince of Condé, the Duke of Enghien, forming a powerful alliance between the Bourbon and Condé families. Their union produced ten children, including the future Duke of Bourbon. This portrait, painted around the time of her marriage, showcases Louise-Françoise's elegant attire, with her intricately embroidered bodice and voluminous skirt, adorned with lace and pearls. Her expressive eyes and delicate smile convey a sense of intelligence, charm, and confidence. Louise-Françoise's life was marked by political intrigue and power struggles, as she navigated the complex web of French court politics. Despite the challenges, she remained a devoted wife and mother, and her legacy as a strong and influential figure in the Bourbon dynasty endures to this day. This image, a testament to the beauty and resilience of the illegitimate daughter of Louis XIV, continues to captivate viewers with its timeless allure and historical significance.
