EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord de Grey and Ripon, a Prominent Liberal Politician of the 19th Century (George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon, 1827-1909) This Vanity Fair print depicts George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon, a prominent Liberal politician of the 19th century. Born at 10 Downing Street, London, in 1827, Ripon was the second son of Prime Minister Frederick John Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich. Despite his father being a Tory, Ripon chose to sit as a Liberal member of Parliament, representing Hull, Huddersfield, and the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was a dedicated and influential member of every Liberal Cabinet from 1861 until his death. Born into a privileged background, Ripon's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Hull in 1852. His political beliefs were shaped by his liberal values and a strong commitment to social reform. Ripon's tenure in Parliament was marked by his advocacy for various causes, including education reform, the abolition of the Corn Laws, and the extension of the franchise. In this Vanity Fair print, Ripon is depicted as an ape, a common satirical representation of politicians during this era. However, this image does not diminish the significant impact Ripon had on British politics during his time in office. His dedication to liberal principles and his ability to effectively advocate for reforms made him a respected and influential figure in British politics. Ripon's political career culminated in his appointment as the Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884, where he implemented various reforms aimed at improving the lives of Indians. Ripon's legacy as a Liberal politician and reformer continues to be celebrated in British history.
