EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment during the Second World War, showcasing a 60-foot hand-operated turntable ladder (TL) of the National Fire Service (NFS) in action. The ladder, manufactured by Austin K4-Merryweather, is being demonstrated at Lambeth, the Headquarters of the London Fire Brigade. Between 1942 and 1943, a total of 50 such appliances were built and mounted on Austin K4 chassis for the Home Office. These TLs were designed to be used by fire crews who were not necessarily qualified TL operators, making them an essential addition to the firefighting fleet during wartime. The steel ladder, engine, and lorry are all visible in the image, with the turntable at the base allowing the ladder to be easily maneuvered and extended to reach great heights. The hand-operated mechanism enabled the ladder to be raised and lowered without the need for a power source, making it a versatile piece of equipment for the London Fire Brigade. The NFS played a crucial role in firefighting during the war, with many traditional fire brigades being absorbed into the NFS to form a unified national force. The 1940s were a period of innovation and adaptation for firefighting equipment, with hand-operated turntable ladders like this one being a testament to the resourcefulness and determination of firefighters during a time of great need. This photograph is a valuable reminder of the important role that firefighting equipment played during the Second World War and the dedication of the men and women who operated it. The Austin K4-Merryweather 60-foot hand-operated turntable ladder remains an iconic symbol of the firefighting heritage of the London Fire Brigade.
