EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of Stoke Newington Fire Station, which was built by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) in 1886, making it one of the last fire stations to be erected by the MFB before the creation of the London County Council (LCC) in 1889 and the subsequent renaming of the MFB to the London Fire Brigade (LFB). Located at the corner of Leswin Road and Brook Road in Stoke Newington, North London (N16), this impressive Victorian building served as the third fire station in the area. The round, red-brick tower with its distinctive gold-lettered signage and intricate detailing is a testament to the importance of firefighting during the late 1800s. The fire station, which closed in 1974, was a vital part of the local community, providing essential firefighting services to the residents of Stoke Newington and its surrounding areas. This photograph, taken in the 1890s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of horse-drawn fire engines and volunteer firefighters. The image also highlights the architectural beauty of the fire station, which stands proudly on the street corner, a reminder of the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the vital role it continues to play in protecting the city from fire and other emergencies.
