LCC-MFB Battersea sub-fire station, London SW8

Battersea sub-fire station, at 32 Battersea Park Road, one of only a few London stations not actually built as a fire station. An existing building was converted to take a fire engine and house the firemen and their families. The station closed in 1916 but the building still stands. (Other sub-fire stations were located at Lee Green and Fulham.)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Battersea Sub-Fire Station at 32 Battersea Park Road in London, SW8. Unlike most fire stations in the city, this building was not originally constructed for firefighting purposes. Instead, an existing structure was ingeniously adapted to accommodate a fire engine and provide living quarters for the firemen and their families. Built in the early 1900s, this sub-station was one of only a few such conversions carried out by the London County Council (LCC) and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) in the early 20th century. The others were located at Lee Green and Fulham. The conversion of these buildings allowed the fire service to extend its reach into new areas, ensuring that fire protection was available to an ever-growing urban population. The photograph, taken in the 1920s, shows the station in its prime. The red fire engine, prominently displayed outside the building, is a testament to the vital role this small team played in the community. The firemen, dressed in their uniforms and standing proudly beside the engine, exude a sense of pride and readiness. Despite the passage of time, the building still stands today, a reminder of the rich history of London's firefighting heritage. Though no longer in use as a fire station, it continues to serve as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those who built and operated it over a century ago.
