EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History published in 1794-1796, showcases an intriguing assemblage of seven distinct rodent species. The first row features a Lemming (Lemmus), a small, round-bodied rodent with a short, bushy tail, and a Hamster (Cricetus), a stocky, burrowing rodent with a distinctive cheek pouch. Moving on to the second row, we encounter the Songar Rat (Songarus), a rodent native to Central Asia, characterized by its long, slender body and pointed snout. The Blind Mole-Rat (Spalax), found in Europe and Asia, is the next species depicted. This unique rodent has highly reduced eyes and is adapted to a subterranean lifestyle. The third row introduces the Perfuming Shrew (Mus), also known as the Muskrat, which is not a true rat but rather a semi-aquatic rodent. Its distinctive odor is used for communication and territory marking. Lastly, the Elephant Shrew (Macroscelides proboscideus), or Sengi, is shown in the bottom row. Despite its name, this small, long-snouted rodent is not related to elephants but is instead classified as a hyrax. This exquisite illustration, drawn and engraved during the late 18th century, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized natural history publications of the time. Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History remains an essential resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike, offering a fascinating glimpse into the natural world as it was understood over two centuries ago.
