EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken at Lords Cricket Ground in June 1914, King George V and his eldest son, Prince Edward, later known as Prince of Wales, Duke of Windsor, are seen enjoying the centenary celebrations of the esteemed cricket club. The occasion was marked by a special match between M.C.C. South African heroes and the Rest of England. King George V, dressed in a formal suit and hat, is engaged in an animated conversation with three distinguished gentlemen: C.B. Fry, Johnny Douglas, and Lord Hawke. Fry, a renowned cricketer and polymath, Douglas, a prolific all-rounder, and Hawke, a former captain of the English cricket team, were all prominent figures in the sporting world at the time. Behind the King, his second son, Prince Albert, later King George VI, stands quietly, observing the scene. Prince Edward, wearing a blazer and cap, is engaged in conversation with F.E. Lacey. To the right of the photograph, Sir C. Cust and the Duke of Devonshire can be seen, adding to the distinguished gathering of guests. The photograph captures a moment of leisure and camaraderie between the royal family and the cricketing greats of the era, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between the British monarchy and the beloved sport of cricket. This image is a testament to the rich history of both Lords Cricket Ground and the royal family, as they came together to celebrate a century of cricket and tradition.
