EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of surrender for Lux, the German Shepherd dog belonging to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, during the final days of World War I. The image, dated 1918, was taken near La Fontaine de la Sauveniere, France, as the Allied forces closed in on the German leader. Lux, a loyal companion and a symbol of the German people's devotion to their monarch, is seen here with a calm and obedient expression, as if sensing the impending change in his master's fortunes. Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, had a deep affection for Lux, whom he had received as a gift from the breed's creator, Max von Stephanitz, in 1899. The dog became an integral part of the Kaiser's life and was often seen by his side at official functions and public appearances. As the Allied forces advanced, the Kaiser and his entourage were forced to flee Germany, leaving Lux behind. The dog was eventually captured by the French military and taken to a military kennel, where he lived out the rest of his days. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human-animal bond and the upheaval caused by the events of the First World War. It also highlights the personal side of a historical figure, offering a glimpse into the life of a man and his faithful companion during a time of great turmoil.
