Jerusalem - Tomb of Absalom
Yad Avshalom (Absaloms Shrine), also known as the Tomb of Absalom - an ancient tomb with a conical roof located in the Kidron Valley in Jerusalem, Israel. For centuries, it was the custom among passers by to throw stones at the monument. At the start of the 20th century, it was considered likely to be the tomb of Alexander Jannaeus, king of Judea from 103 to 76 BCE, but modern archaeological research has now dated the tomb to the first century CE. In 2003, a fourth-century inscription on one of the walls identified the monument as the tomb of " Zachariah, the martyr, the holy priest, the father of John." This suggests that it was the burial place of the Temple priest Zechariah, father of John the Baptist

EDITORS COMMENTS
Jerusalem's Tomb of Absalom, also known as Yad Avshalom or the Shrine of Absalom, is an ancient monument located in the Kidron Valley. With its distinctive conical roof, this monument has been a subject of intrigue and speculation for centuries. For a long time, it was believed to be the tomb of Alexander Jannaeus, the Hasmonean king of Judea from 103 to 76 BCE. However, modern archaeological research has now dated the tomb to the first century CE. The monument's history is rich and complex, with centuries of use and reuse. For a period, it was the custom among passers-by to throw stones at the monument, leaving it covered in debris. In 2003, a significant discovery was made when a fourth-century inscription was uncovered on one of the walls. This inscription identified the monument as the tomb of "Zachariah, the martyr, the holy priest, the father of John." This suggests that it was the burial place of Zechariah, the Temple priest and father of John the Baptist. The Tomb of Absalom, or Zachariah, stands as a testament to Jerusalem's rich history and the many stories and legends that have shaped its past. The monument's ancient walls bear witness to the many layers of history that have accumulated over the centuries, making it a must-see destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of Jerusalem and Israel.
