EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Joseph-Charles-Paul Bonaparte, also known as Prince Napoleon and affectionately nicknamed "Plon-Plon," the second son of Jerome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, and his wife Catherine of Wurttemberg. The photograph, taken in 1891, depicts Prince Napoleon in a formal military uniform, complete with a blue tunic, red trousers, gold epaulets, and a white sash. The regal pose and piercing gaze of the subject convey a sense of authority and nobility. Born in 1814, Prince Napoleon was the nephew of the famous French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. After his father's abdication in 1813, the Bonaparte family was exiled from France, and they spent several years traveling between various European courts. Prince Napoleon received a thorough education and was trained in military tactics, languages, and diplomacy. In 1822, at the age of eight, Prince Napoleon was appointed as the Duke of Reichstadt, a title bestowed upon him by his uncle, Napoleon Bonaparte. However, the title was largely symbolic, as the Bonapartes had no real political power or territory. Despite the challenges of his upbringing, Prince Napoleon went on to lead a distinguished military career, serving in the armies of various European powers. He was also a patron of the arts and a prolific writer, publishing several books on military strategy and history. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a fascinating historical figure, who, despite being a member of one of Europe's most famous families, lived a complex and often overlooked existence. The rich colors and intricate details of the uniform, as well as the enigmatic expression on Prince Napoleon's face, make this a captivating and evocative image.
