EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Jeanne-Paule-Henriette-Rachel Dieulafoy (1851-1916), a renowned French archaeologist and traveler, in the prime of her career. Born as Rachel Magre, she later married archaeologist Paul Dieulafoy, and together they embarked on numerous expeditions, most notably in Morocco and Susa, Persia. The image, taken around 1916, portrays a determined and focused Dieulafoy, her piercing gaze fixed on the horizon as she stands amidst the rugged Moroccan landscape. Her weathered hat shields her from the harsh sun, while her clothing, consisting of a long-sleeved blouse and a voluminous skirt, reflects the practicality required for her arduous journeys. Dieulafoy's groundbreaking work in Morocco began in 1885 when she and her husband discovered the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. Her meticulous excavations and documentation of the site significantly contributed to the understanding of Roman presence in North Africa. In Susa, Persia, the couple unearthed the famous Stele of Darius I, a monumental inscription that is now housed in the Louvre Museum. Despite the challenges of traveling and excavating in unfamiliar territories, Dieulafoy's passion for history and archaeology propelled her forward. Her courage and dedication paved the way for future generations of archaeologists and travelers, leaving an indelible mark on the world of history and culture. This photograph serves as a testament to her unwavering spirit and the adventures that awaited her in the vast, unexplored territories of Morocco and Persia.
